Reach of Internet in China: 700 million
China’s Censorship: Facebook, Twitter and on large number of websites
Aim: To have greater control on domestic Internet
China has proposed rules for Internet domains names to be registered through government-licensed providers only by verifying real names and addresses. They will create a blacklist of ‘forbidden characters’ and prohibit registration of websites containing broadly and vaguely defined prohibited content. They will also prevent access to Chinese-registered domain names that acquired from registries/registrars that are not in compliance with Chinese regulations. This will cut China’s Internet from the rest of the world.
